What to Expect from Your Insurance Company

What to Expect from Your Insurance Company

If a storm damages your home your insurance company will want to inspect the damage, assess it quickly and settle with you as soon as possible. Be cautious, however, that you do not accept any payment that is less than you deserve under the coverage  limits on your homeowners policy.

The first check you get from your insurance company is often an advance, not a final payment. If you’re offered an on-the-spot settlement, you can accept the check right away. Later on, if you find other damage, you can “reopen” the claim and file for an additional amount. Most policies require claims to be filed within one year from the date of disaster.

When both the structure of your home and your personal belongings are damaged, you generally get two separate checks from your insurance company. You should also receive a separate check for additional living expenses.

When it comes to repairing the damage, you have the right to choose your own contractor. You do not have to use a contractor recommended by your insurance agent or insurance company. These are often “low cost” bidders who may be likely to cut corners just to win the job.

Instead, call Aaron’s Home Improvement to assure that your repairs are done right, at a fair price. We work with almost every major insurance carrier and understand the claims process, so we can help you get all that you deserve.
