Now that November has arrived, we’re one step closer to the return of the coldest weather of the year in Michigan. We may not be on winter’s doorstep just yet, but it’s a good time to look at issues at home related to the lower temperatures. One of those issues is the loss of heat through old or outdated windows.

Replacement windows are an integral part of creating a more energy-efficient home. The money-saving results will be experienced immediately as you will see reflected in your utility bills, and the benefits will last year round. Plus, if you have never shopped for replacement windows, you may be delighted to discover the options you have in materials.

The strongest window material is fiberglass, known for its durable quality and ability to be painted. It’s roughly three times stronger than an aluminum window and approximately nine times stronger than a vinyl window. One of the energy-efficient aspects of choosing fiberglass comes from it’s lack of conducting hot or cold air. A high-glass content makes this an environmentally friendly product, while minimizing wear on a window unit’s seals and materials due to similar expansion and contraction rates of panes and frames. They also don’t warp, crack, rot or corrode.

A primary advantage of a vinyl window is its price point, relatively inexpensive, while still offering the look of a more expensive wood window. Vinyl windows are also very durable and require little maintenance. Dead air spaces inside a vinyl window help provide thermal resistance that keeps heat inside the home where it belongs. These dead air spaces can also be insulated to increase that level of thermal resistance.

Wood can also be an energy-conscious choice for window material, and comes with an ability to be painted or finished to match a homeowner’s tastes. This renewable material does require more maintenance than vinyl or fiberglass window options, yet its core is solid rather than hollow. Also, they do need to be protected from moisture to reduce the risk of warping and rot, especially if a homeowner chooses a lower quality type of wood or finish product.

Composite windows are yet another replacement option that can help minimize heat loss during a chilly Michigan winter. Also, they require little or no maintenance, which makes them very attractive to many homeowners. Another benefit of composite windows come from their resistance to warping, and their appealing look of wood.

With overnight lows already in the 30s, it’s not too soon to schedule an in-home consultation regarding your windows. Aaron’s Home Improvement can assess your home’s windows and make a recommendation that suits your tastes and your budget. Just call 888-362-7942 today to get started.
